.MOSCOW and .МОСКВА (Cyrillic string can be translated to English as "Moscow") – new top-level domains intended for the City of Moscow. The project was started in 2010 by RU-CENTER, the leading Russian domain name registrar, and is being carried out within the ICANN New gTLD Program. Today the initiative is being coordinated by the Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Development (FAITID) with the official support of the Department of Information Technology of Moscow.
Implementation of the city top-level domains is a worldwide trend. Except Moscow London, Paris, Berlin, New York and other world’s major cities applied for their own domain extensions.
According to the current launch roadmap the names’ registration in the .МОСКВА domain will be started by the end of 2013, while the .MOSCOW extension will be launched in the first quarter of 2014.
During Landrush and General Availability periods registration will be available to anyone on a first-come first-served basis.
The registration cost for registrants will be defined by registrars accredited for the .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА strings. Preliminarily registration costs of a domain name in the registry (for registrars) are available here.
The list of accredited registrars will be announced closer to the top-level domains’ launch.
